about garnet silk

Garnet Silk (Garnet Damon Smith) ; April 2nd 1966 – December 9th 1994) was a Jamaican reggae musician and Rastafarian known for his diverse, emotive, powerful and smooth voice. During the early 1990s he was hailed as a rising talent however his career was ended by his early death in 1994.

Smith was born in Manchester, Jamaica. His musical career began at the age of twelve, when he performed under the name Little Bimbo. During the 1980s he worked as a deejay on sound systems such as Conquering LionSoul RemembrancePepper’s DiscoStereophonic, and Destiny Outernational (where he first met Tony Rebel). He recorded his first track in 1985, but it would be two years later before his first single, “Problem Everywhere” was released. An album of material from this period (Journey) was later released.

When Garnet Silk fully entered the reggae scene in the early 90s, the message of Rastafari had faded to the backdrop of the musical stage. Profanity and vanity had asserted themselves on the forefront of Jamaica’s musical offerings.

the legacy of a legend

Garnet Silk was constantly encouraged to give up on his dreams of spreading the ‘Message of Jah’, and to join the trends that were dominating the dancehall. Silk was undeterred. In 1991, his message began to take hold and he was then recognized as a bright, rising talent, full of promise. “It’s Growing” is the only one of Garnet Silk’s album that was actually cut and released as the artist planned. His projected debut, “Love Is the Answer”, recorded between 1990 and 1991 for Steely & Clevie, wasn’t released until 1994. “Nothing Can Divide Us” appeared the following year. It’s Growing” is the album that established Silk’s reputation, and is a continuing reminder of his ferocious talent.
